My work has led me to explore spatial audio methods beyond video games, though sometimes just as interactive. The tracks below were rendered binaurally for this site but were mixed using Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos respectively. Both pieces were written to utilise the opportunity to layer melodies and rhythms that would feel cluttered if not mixed in a 3D space. My study for 4 string quartets and marimba was written to be played through a circle of speakers, with the marimba panning in reaction to where the listener stood.

All the tracks on this page must be listened to with headphones!

I have utilised spatial audio for video games, installations, virtual reality and other immersive experiences. If you have a wild project in mind, get in touch!

Study for 4 string quartets and marimba

Demonstration of how some instruments in a  composition can remain static while others are interactive, ideal for installation pieces. Skip to 3:49 to hear the composition.

Motion controlled instrument

A synthesiser built in MAX MSP and controlled by motion. While the audio itself does not inherently play in 3 dimensions I found the concept of creating sound from how a participant acts within a space fascinating.
